Drain Flies (Clogmia albipunctata)

Identification
Drain flies are small insects, about 2–4 mm long, grayish-brown in color with hairy wings resembling those of a moth. They fly slowly and are usually found near moist surfaces.
They are most commonly found in:
- bathrooms, showers, and sauna areas
- floor drains in kitchens and utility rooms
- near drain pipes and grease traps
Adult flies are often seen near sinks or showers, resting on walls or flying slowly around wet areas.
Habits
Drain flies live in drains, floor traps, and moist organic residues such as grease and soap buildup. They reproduce rapidly and lay their eggs in the biofilm that coats the inside of pipes. Larvae can survive in drains for several weeks.
Simply removing visible adults is not enough – the root of the problem lies in the internal surfaces of the pipes where the larvae develop.
