Hornet (Vespa crabro)

Identification
The hornet is the largest stinging insect in Finland, measuring up to 2.5–3.5 cm. It has a brown and yellow patterned body, and its buzzing is deeper and louder than a wasp’s. Hornets are generally calmer but will aggressively defend their nest if threatened.
Habits
Hornets:
- build their nests in hollow tree trunks, attics, wall cavities, or tree holes
- prefer quiet, shaded locations
- hunt other insects for food and can help reduce pest populations
- often fly in the evening and may be attracted to outdoor lights
Hornet colonies are smaller than those of wasps, but their sting is more painful and may trigger strong reactions.
Control
Hornet nest removal should always be performed by a professional, as nests are often hard to reach and hornets may defend aggressively.
A pest control professional will:
- accurately locate the nest
- use proper protective equipment and treatment methods
- safely remove the nest and prevent re-nesting
- provide advice on prevention measures
Hornets are beneficial to biodiversity and should only be removed if the nest poses a safety risk.
Summary:
Wasps: common, aggressive, often nest near buildings → always require professional control
Hornets: larger, calmer, but strong defenders → always require professional control
