Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

The rat is one of the most harmful rodents in Finland. It poses a health risk, causes structural damage, and creates dirt and odor problems in its surroundings. Rats reproduce quickly and can cause a serious infestation in a short time.
Identification
The rat is a large rodent, 15–30 cm long excluding the tail. It is grayish-brown and heavily built. It leaves behind droppings, gnaw marks, and a strong odor. Usually active at night.
Habits
The rat is an intelligent, cautious, and highly adaptable rodent. It is mostly active in the dark and seeks shelter in the following places:
- under buildings and in foundations
- waste shelters and sewer systems
- storage areas, basements, and wall cavities
- food storage and animal feeding areas
Rats eat almost anything edible and also gnaw on plastic, wood, and electrical wires. They can enter through very small openings and may live hidden for long periods before being noticed.
Control
If a rat is seen indoors, in the yard, or if signs are found, it is highly recommended to call a professional pest controller immediately.
A professional will:
- assess the situation and rat movement routes
- create a tailored control plan
- place the correct control tools (baits, traps)
- provide guidance and carry out preventive measures
- monitor the results and development of the problem
DIY control is often ineffective and may even worsen the situation if rats learn to avoid traps or bait.
Summary:
Rats can spread diseases and cause severe property damage. Fast and professional pest control is the safest and most effective way to manage the problem.
