Brown carpet beetle (Attagenus pellio)

Ruskoturkiskuoriainen

Identification

The adult beetle is dark-colored, about 3–5 mm in length. The larva is brown, long, and hairy, with a distinctive tufted “tail.” These insects are often found in wool textiles, furs, and insulation materials.

Habits

The brown carpet beetle is dark brown or almost black. Its larva is light brown, elongated, and covered in bristles, with a clearly visible tail-like tuft.

Commonly found in:

  • attics
  • storage areas
  • older apartments and buildings
  • wall cavities and insulation

They cause damage to:

  • wool clothing and fabrics
  • furs and feather-filled items
  • insulation and padding materials
  • dead insects and organic dust

Larvae can live hidden for several months, causing slow and unnoticed damage, making early detection difficult.

Pest control

If brown carpet beetles are detected, professional pest control is strongly recommended. A pest expert can identify hidden areas and treat the infestation effectively.

Treatment generally requires two treatments.

A professional pest controller will:

  • locate and map out infestation areas
  • treat the entire space with effective solutions
  • monitor progress and ensure success
  • advise on preventive measures
