Clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella)

Identification
The clothes moth is a light-colored, small moth (about 1 cm) that moves slowly and avoids light. The damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on animal-based materials – especially wool, fur, and feathers.
Typical signs:
- Small pale moths hiding in dark areas
- Damage to wool garments, furs, and feather-filled items
- Bite marks, bare patches, and fine webbing
Habits
Clothes moths lay eggs in areas where there are:
- wool clothing and carpets
- furs and down pillows
- upholstered furniture
- quiet, undisturbed spaces (such as closets, storage rooms, attics)
The larvae feed on natural fibers and may remain hidden for weeks or months. Egg-laying often goes unnoticed, and the infestation may only become visible later. Adult moths do not feed, but can lay up to 100 eggs.
Pest control
If clothes moths are detected at home or in storage areas, professional pest control is always recommended. DIY methods are often insufficient and may not reach hidden larvae or eggs.
Treatment generally requires two applications.
A professional pest controller will ensure success by:
- thoroughly treating the entire space
- targeting hidden spots and structural gaps
- providing preventive advice and aftercare instructions
Clothes moths can cause significant and expensive damage to garments, furniture, and textiles. The sooner treatment begins, the easier and more affordable it is to resolve the issue.
