Varied carpet beetle (Anthrenus verbasci)

Vyöturkiskuoriainen

Identification

A small (approx. 5 mm), round beetle with a light, horizontal “band” across its back. The larvae are hairy and feed on wool, fur, and dust. Commonly found in closets, behind baseboards, and on floors.

Habits

The varied carpet beetle is a small, round insect with a light band or mottled pattern on its back. Adults live outdoors and feed on pollen, but the larvae can nest indoors.

The larvae feed on animal-based materials, such as:

  • wool
  • fur
  • feathers
  • dead insects
  • dust

They prefer calm, warm places such as behind closets, under floor trim, and in storage spaces.

Pest control

If carpet beetles are detected, professional pest control is recommended. Properly targeted treatment ensures even hidden larvae are eliminated.

Treatment generally requires two applications.

A professional pest technician will:

  • treat the entire affected area
  • focus on hidden spots and structural gaps
  • follow up and monitor success
  • provide preventative advice and instructions
