Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)

Identification
Wasps are 10–15 mm long, yellow and black, with a narrow waist and swift flight. They are often confused with hornets but are smaller in size. Wasp behavior is unpredictable, and they can sting multiple times.
Habits
Wasps:
- build nests in roofs, between walls, under eaves, or in the ground
- live in colonies with up to thousands of individuals
- search for sweet foods and protein (flowers, garbage, food scraps)
- defend their nest aggressively, especially in late summer
Wasp nests grow quickly and can become dangerous, particularly near residential areas or outbuildings.
Control
If a nest is located near a building or poses a threat, professional pest control is recommended.
A professional will:
- safely locate the nest
- use appropriate protective gear and treatment methods
- ensure the entire colony is removed
- provide guidance on preventing future nesting
DIY wasp control is often dangerous and can result in stings. Wasps should not be disturbed unless their location poses a clear risk.
